Brooklin specifics
What working in Brooklin actually looks like
Brooklin runs a week or so behind the Whitby lakeshore at both ends of the season — later first cuts, earlier finish. The sandier ground and open exposure also mean lawns here go off-colour sooner in a dry July than they do closer to the lake. Winter service starts earlier and finishes later than the lakeshore, generally early November through mid-April.
Brooklin's newer subdivisions are almost all young sod over graded clay with very little topsoil under it, which is why lawns here brown early in a dry July. The rural properties toward Ashburn are the opposite — open turf on sandier moraine ground that dries fast but comes back quickly after rain.
Brooklin sits higher and colder than the Whitby lakeshore ten minutes south, and it has open farmland on every side. Once the wind gets up, driveways and lot entrances drift back in after the snow has stopped, so properties here often need a return pass the lakeshore never does.
The commercial side of Brooklin is a small main street on Baldwin with a wide ring of newer subdivisions around it, plus rural and estate properties out toward Ashburn, Myrtle and Columbus — which is why the schedule gets built around how each property trades rather than around whatever order our route happens to fall in.
